This database includes rare or obscure local sightings from books, magazines, newspapers, or other sources, including sighting reports received via e-mail. Sightings from before 1970 will not be included. Those reports that list "personal investigation" as the source are from cases I was involved in but the investigation was incomplete (witness was uncooperative, did not return report forms, etc.). Fully investigated cases will be listed in another part of the site.
I recieved an e-mail report of a UFO sighting in Sandwich MA on August 2. The witness was one of a group of people on the waterfront there who observed at least 20 lights in the night sky that appeared to be flying objects. The lights were in an arrow-shaped formation that pointed upward. The excited witnesses watched the lights for about 30 minutes until an airplane appeared, as the airplane approached the formation the lights disappeared one by one starting with the light closest to the approaching plane. The witness called the coast guard to ask if they had any airplanes flying that night and was told that they did not. The witness then called the local police and was told that nobody else had called to report this sighting. UFO investigators have long been aware that there are a large number of UFO sightings on Cape Cod. Area residents frequently see strange lights, either singly or in formation, executing seemingly impossible maneuvers in the sky. One Cape Cod resident once told me, "From the info I've gained it seems as if most area residents have experienced this phenomenon at least once, but it is obviously a somewhat low-profile subject." The area where these reports are most frequent, around Falmouth, Bourne, Mashpee, and Sandwich, definitely seems to have some strange activity.
What follows is the text of an e-mail I received from the witness in December 2007:
" At 1250 pm 12-01-07 while standing on the platform at Green Station I
witnessed three ufo's appear, fly around, disappear, then reappear, fly around
again in a similar pattern, then to my amazment disappear from the same point
they disappeared from the first time. If it were not for the patterns I would
have passsed them off as debris. They moved against the wind. They appeared to
be small white balls not to far away. They were not glowing or giving of
reflection of a metallic nature. I was hoping I was not the only one to see
something. Sorry no pictures."
What follows is the text of an e-mail I received from the witness
in December 2003:
"We live in Peabody Ma, very close to the North Shore Mall.
Our Apt building backs up to a swamp / stream area that used to house a
railroad track. We are 1/2 mile from rt 128, yet this area is uninhabited and unaccessable.
About 2-3 weeks apart back in September 2003, my wife saw what she described
as a large cotton ball that was flying in the area over head. Each siting
lasted only a few seconds but it was enough for our friend who was visiting
to point out the window each time and say something strange is in the sky!
They looked to the window and saw a fuzzy white object move, change
direction, then disappear.
I have a tape of "UFO Encounters Archive Tape" on hand and when I got home I
showed it to her and within minutes a typical ball UFO was shown and she
said 'That's it, that's what we saw'.
After talking with neighbors, other stories were told of stange lights in
this same area."
While driving on Route 95 North at approximately 7 PM, a single witness saw an object described as a "neon tube", white in color, fly very swifly overhead heading northeast. The apparent size was said to be twice the size of the full moon, and the object did not leave a trail. The duration of the sighting was about 5 seconds. (reported via e-mail)
Three large red lights and one bright white light were seen moving very quickly across the sky. The witness said, "These lights were in a strobe light fashion set at high speed quickly flashing all red then white. I called my son to see it- it was moving across the tree tops, he had thought it a jet... I quickly pointed out the other planes in the air and how fast they were moving and their light configuration... this light was moving very quickly and for the height of it if it was a jet I am sure we would have heard something...no noise at all. At arm length the lights were about the size of my hand. The lights were brilliant, not a dull blinking light like on a plane, not separated like a plane, either. They all seemed bunched together..." The sighting took place at the witnesses' home just off Route 3 by the Sagamore bridge rotary. (e-mail from witness)
Two people saw an unusual pulsing colored light maneuvering at night for 35 minutes. (Massachusetts MUFON)
On Tuesday, June 27, 2000, 20-year-old Joe Finn of Melrose saw a strange light in the sky over Boston. He reported, "At 10:40 PM me and my girlfriend saw a bright white object heading east to west (opposite of the commerical airport traffic heading towards Logan) in the Boston Common. The sighting was about 100 yards from the exit of the common heading to the Boston public garden (the path next to the softball field). It lasted about 10 seconds, the object made no sound and was too fast even for a helicopter. It disappeared behind the buildings across from Park St. station. All air traffic stopped coming over the common after the object passed over." Mr. Finn also reported that the light displayed no blinking whatsoever. (e-mail from witness)
"Hey there, I thought I'd share my UFO sighting with you, as I was curious if you'd received any other sightings in the area. I think my case is particularly intriguing because I have an indirect witness to my sighting. I live in Lunenburg, MA, next to Fitchburg and Leominster. Last night, June 6, 2000, I was on my porch talking on the phone with my girlfriend. The porch faces a lake, and with the exception of two fairly small pine trees, I have a clear view of both the lake and the sky. At about 10:45 PM, I saw a bright light from behind the pine trees. It was so bright that at first I thought it was the moon. But then I realized that the moon was not out on this particular night. I then commented to my girlfriend that a plane was flying very close. However, it made no noise. The light then appeared from behind the trees, getting dimmer and smaller very rapidly. At first it had the brightness of a close plane, then of a plane at normal altitude, then a dim star, then it disappeared altogether. What was extraordinary was the rate of ascension. It appeared in the area of Cassiopeia, which was behind the trees, and headed towards Cepheus away from the horizon. My guess is that it headed roughly northeast, as I was facing Cepheus, with Cassiopeia to my left and Lyra to my right and high overhead. This whole incident lasted ten, maybe fifteen seconds. I've never heard of a plane that was able to ascend from near moon brightness to invisibility in this short amount of time. About a minute later, a plane travelling at very high speed flew from the southwest towards the area where I spotted the light. Two more planes appeared from other directions, then another followed the original plane from the same direction and at about the same altitude. Another plane appeared, and for about an hour, between three and five planes flew around the area, seeming almost as if they were patrolling. During this whole incident, I was on the phone with my girlfriend and reporting every detail, and she can confirm most of what I am writing. About 11:30, the planes scattered, and only one of the planes from the southwest returned, flying at roughly its original altitude. The planes from the southwest were clearly audible flying by, while, as I mentioned, the bright light made no noise as it travelled. I don't know what it was, but I think it may have been my first UFO sighting. I would love to hear your opinion on this incident. If you need any more details or hear of any more reports of sightings in this area, please let me know. Thanks for reading." (e-mail from witness)
On Route 6, a man saw a large craft in a hazy sky. It appeared as a ring with 2 long tubes. (Massachusetts MUFON)
Witness was at home when he saw two silver egg-shaped objects, one above the other, "going really fast and moving in weird directions" before they took off. He attempted to take a picture, but it did not come out. (conversation with witness, 12/27/99)
What follows is the text of an e-mail I recieved from the witness in 2003.
"Hello,
My name is Ian S. and I just finished browsing your website. I am
generally skeptical about paranormal activity and believe many nighttime ufo
sightings to in actuality be aircraft (the navigation lights on aircraft are
white, red and green, often appear in a triangle or diamond configuration,
and blink), although I do believe that more exists than meets the eye.
However, that is not why I am writing to you. I have witnessed several
events which are beyond my explanation, and being as I didn't see much from
western Mass. on your site, I thought I'd share them with you.
I have lived in North Egremont, MA, for most of my life... Once, when I was perhaps 12 years old (aprox. summer, 1997), I had hiked
to the top of Jug End Mt. with a friend as we often did. We were sitting on
the rocks, eating a snack we had brought along with us when we saw a long,
silvery/whiteish object move quickly over a field below us and to the
north-east before dissapearing behind a knoll in the field. (It was not
untill recently, when I began to do more reading on ufo sightings, that I
realized that this object fit the common 'cigar' description.) The sighting
lasted a few seconds, if that. Within a minute or two we saw fire trucks
drive up a nearby road and towards the field where the object had
dissapeared. My initial reaction was that it must have been an aircraft
accident, so when I got home that day I asked my father, who worked at the
local airport, if there had been any accidents that day. He said that to
the best of his knowledge, there had not been. I never heard anything else
about it in any newspapers, radio or television shows.
I have also read an account of a woman from Gt. Barrington, MA (minutes
away) reporting a "blue-green luminous cigar-shaped object" on July 7, 1957.
--No. Adams Independent, and seem to recall someone someone reporting a
circular burn-mark in a field down the road from my house many years back..."
Two witnesses saw an object like a "giant plus sign" near an overpass. It appeared to be about 90 feet long and 90 feet wide. There were no apparent engines, lights or windows, nor were any tethers seen leading to the ground. The object was in view for 1 minute. (E-mail from witness).
Here is the text of an article from the Milford Daily News of 10/21/95: "'Big X In Sky' Milford--UFOs? An astrological portent of the coming apocalypse? Gas vapors? Or Clinton's political demise? No one knows what the huge, vaporous X that appeared in the sky over the Congress St. area Wednesday night was, but all that saw it said that it was real. A man walking his dog on Emmons Street shortly after 9 p.m. spotted the X and was puzzled. He called a relative who lived on Congress Street, and both of them watched the X. Other residents in the area claimed they saw it too. At first the X was thought to be intersecting vapor trails from two jets, but according to witnesses, it lasted too long to be simple vapors, which would have been quickly dispersed by the wind. Milford Police said they didn't receive any calls of a UFO Wednesday." Please note the similarity between this 1995 report and the "Chemtrails" of 1998/1999.
A 16-year-old girl in a car saw a silvery cigar-shaped object that "bounced" up and down. By the time she could alert the other passengers in the car, it was gone. (Personal investigation)
Three witnesses in a car saw a silvery cigar-shaped object at a high elevation that disappeared, then reappeared in another part of the sky. (Personal investigation)
Between 2:30 and 3:00 AM, a woman saw a perfectly round, small light, like a car headlight, moving among trees. It moved in front of houses twenty feet away from the witness. (Leominster-Fitchburg "Sentinel-Enterprise" 6/3/96)
A woman saw a triangular craft fly overhead, stop, and hover before "winking out". The very bright object was seen at 9:40 PM. (UFO Magazine (UK) Vol. 15 No. 2 p. 46. "1995 Triangles Across America")
The police log contained a report of a UFO sighting on Northborough Rd. No other details available. (Middlesex News 7/14/96 p.1)
A family saw a triangular object with 4-5 headlight-like lights, less than fifty feet in length, hovering over a field. At times it would move slowly and stop. The family flashed their headlights at it, then it moved closer. They left out of fear, and the object moved slowly away. (Flying Saucer Digest, Summer 1994 #126 p.4-5. From the 2/3/94 Marblehead Reporter.)
A 30-year-old man saw a silent triangle of red lights approaching. This pattern turned into a dark cigar shape with at least nine red, white and blue lights on it, some blinking. He waved to it, and then a white light beamed briefly right into his eyes. The object sped off at an estimated 200 miles per hour. (MUFON UFO Journal).
At 11:30 PM on Rte. 128, a woman saw a puff of light 3 or 4 feet in diameter float in front of her car. (Massachusetts MUFON)
9/10/87 Haverhill area
"Phantom helicopters" flying in
formation with unconventional lighting at very low altitudes were seen in
Haverhill, Amesbury, Merrimac, and Nashua, NH.

A young couple saw a large, oval, hovering object, like a fluorescent
light, bobbing up and down in the sky for a few minutes before it
disappeared.
(MUFON- Investigated by Joe Nyman)
A man saw a strange deep "star," deep reddish-orange in color, near his home. He thought it was Mars at first, then realized it was not. "It looked as though it was in space or extremely high up in the atmosphere." He watched it for 10 minutes. "Then suddenly, it streaked across the cloudless sky in an instant, leaving behind a reddish trail that was perfectly straight and extremely narrow." (E-mail from witness).
Four adults were driving on Rte. 6 when they saw a
glowing fog over the forest next to the road. The "brilliant fluorescent
glow" lit up the area like "sudden daylight." One witness saw a
structured craft in the fog, an octagonal object with "round portals of
light."
(Orbiter #1 10/87)
From an e-mail from the witness: "A friend and I had a sighting around 1979. It was summer vacation and we were walking to my house around 11 pm. As we rounded the corner for the hill I lived on, (Gertrude St) we noticed a UFO hovering above us.
"Unlike many accounts I had heard about, this had no light, was a shiny black and looked like a battle ship upside down. It was vast, and covered the sky, impossible to take it all in or see what shape it was. It hovered there for a while, there was no sound, but I sensed a hum about it.
"After a while it started forward up the hill. I kind of remember seeing a light on the back. We chased it up the hill and then to the left up a hilly neighbors driveway. From their yard we could see over the panorama (scenic and fabulous panorama, I mean LOL) of Lynn ahead, and we watched the light disappear across the sky.
"I never knew what to think about this sighting. The fact that it happened at the bottom of my street seemed so unlikely. Many years after, my friend called me asking me if I remembered seeing the UFO. I was very surprised to hear it from him, because he's the type to dismiss all things paranormal."

A woman saw a bright white oval light, "almost solid in appearance, moving
rather quickly in a straight line" from her bedroom window at 1:00 AM. It
had diffused lighting around the edge and was about the size of the full moon.
(MUFON- Investigated by Joseph Nyman)
12/10/78 Milton
A man saw a lime-green object, like a rectangle but slightly
wider at one end, traveling quickly but silently near his home for 4 seconds.
(MUFON-
Investigated by Merlyn Sheehan)

At least 6 witnesses observed a rotating disc over a
drive-in theater. The object was described as being the size of 2 large
houses, and it was seen maneuvering before it moved away.
(UFO Research
Newsletter vol. V no. 3)
At noontime, a single witness saw 5 bright disc-shaped craft hovering in the sky. During the two minutes that the objects hovered in the sky, he was able to photograph the objects and view them through 7X35 binoculars. The objests suddenly sped away at a speed estimated by the witness to be ten times faster than a jet aircraft. (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomenon)
Dec. 1973 Dedham
A couple driving home saw a brilliant light hovering at treetop level.
They followed the moving light for several minutes, then, when they were
within several hundred feet of the UFO, they stopped. The UFO flipped over,
then approached the car. The driver, Paul Amichetti, put the car in reverse,
but the UFO followed the car. They stopped and Amichetti got out. Then, the
object rose slowly and disappeared into the sky. The witnesses called the
police, who responded to the call and saw a noiseless cluster of lights in a
swampy area near the town. Two other officers saw "low, slow-moving
clusters of red lights shaped like inverted cups with white lights fore and
aft."
(NICAP UFO Investigator 5/74 p.2)
4 people saw a glowing golden object about the size of the full moon fly silently in the sky. (E-mail from witness).
